New rounds of severe weather for the central United States

A bigger event looms Sunday through Tuesday.

Somehow, we made it to another Friday! The week’s general timidity persists to close it out, but as illustrated below even tamer times have some intense action to gander at.

Weather Watch

Storms and more storms. A percolating pattern of daily severe thunderstorms in the Plains rolls on today and Saturday. Some storms could cause flooding as they crawl the landscape. By Sunday, the impacts of the main jet stream dip in the west becomes more apparent in parts of the western and central Plains. Monday looks like the big day — perhaps focused on the Midwest to central Plains. Tuesday features storms eventually moving into the eastern United States.

Plains tornadoes

Several storms spawned tornadoes in the Plains on Thursday, from Nebraska to Texas, for the biggest severe weather day of the year so far in that zone. Of course, classic tornado alley is just getting started with the regional severe weather peak of May and June around the bend.

It was a great day for storm chasers as multiple targets produced twisters, huge hail, stunning storm structure or all of the above.

There were several reports of hail reaching 4 tor 5-plus inches in diameter. Veteran storm chaser Adam Lucio captured a stone that was 5.2 inches wide near Silverton, Texas.

Additional severe weather is expected in the region Friday and during the weekend.
