Locally heavy rain in parts of Western States with low pressure nearby

The Pacific Ocean has much of the tropical interest for now.

Most of the interesting weather happenings are happening in the Western U.S. on Tuesday. In the east, there’s a lot of nice weather, including in my backyard where another day of sunny 70s is expected.

Weather watch

Western rain. A low-pressure area spinning offshore the Oregon and California border has a trailing front into the San Francisco Bay area. A hint of the cool season to come, it is bringing some much-needed precipitation to the parched and fire-scarred region with showers fairly widespread near the low. The most persistent rain looks to target Oregon, which could help temper the high fire risk there, although some lightning threat will also need monitoring.

Pacific storms. Tropical Storm Kiko is making its closest pass near Hawaii as a much-weakened storm. Although it had sustained winds of 60 mph, it looked much like a batch of showers on satellite early Tuesday. High surf advisories are up for the chain today as waves it kicked up continue to reach shore. The next system is expected to develop shortly just off the Mexico coast.

Summer was Spain’s hottest on record. (Maximiliano Herrera, Bluesky)
