Heat easing in eastern U.S. as high pressure breaks down
Peak summer is waning, for now.
A pattern rejiggering is underway across the US of A, and it will eventually lead to rising levels of heat in the central and western portions of the country. As this work week heads toward conclusion, the story is mainly that of a waning heat dome in the east.
Weather Watch
Heat wave downbursts. Severe storms brought 70 mph wind to Paris, France and the D.C. area on Wednesday. In both cases, the activity was fueled by intense heat triggering thunderstorms that gusted out with downbursts. France has been seeing its hottest weather this summer, with up to 107 degrees (41.5 Celsius) in the south, while the Mid-Atlantic is near the tail end of its recent heat wave.
Lightning links
Alaska's largest wildfires of year rage after 31,000 lightning strikes over 3-day period.
Ghostly tornado crosses road in Minnesota on Wednesday.
102 (again) in the NYC area on Wednesday amid more heat records.
US heat wave exposes infrastructure, health vulnerabilities – and it’s not quite over yet.
And now, some relief
It may be relatively short lived, but cooler weather is taking over the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic to end the work week.

It’ll be another hot one in the D.C. region and south, but Boston is only forecast to be around 70 Thursday. This follows highs of 102 and 95 over the past two days there.
By Friday, temperatures are mainly in the 70s to near 80 as far south as Baltimore and Washington thanks to east winds and plentiful clouds behind a front.
Higher temperatures return for the Mid-Atlantic by the weekend, but only toward typical levels of summertime heat.
