First big snow Saturday in Chicago as November closes cold

A third storm system is on the models early next week.

Winter stormed much of the eastern half of the country over recent days and will continue to hold much of it captive into the foreseeable future. With one snowy system in its final phases, there are two more ahead in coming days.

Weather watch

Another round of snow. A new storm system is working through the central U.S. and headed toward the Great Lakes this weekend. It’ll drop a swath of snow up to 8 to 15 inches, including in and around the city of Chicago. Winter storm warnings are in effect from the prairies of Montana to the southern Great Lakes with more a good bet.

Followed by round three? There’s yet another storm system to watch around Monday through Tuesday. Each in this current series seems to want to impact areas at least somewhat south or east compared to the last. This one looks to target portions of the Midwest, Ohio Valley, northern Mid-Atlantic and New England. It could drop another solid stripe of plowable snow, especially once it starts to pick up some additional moisture nearer the East Coast.

It’s beginning to look a lot like winter

Lake effect is still ripping off Erie and Ontario this morning, with up to another 20+ inches in the forecast downwind of the latter.

Syracuse will catch portions of the band and is forecast to see 4 to 8 inches inches Friday into Saturday with considerably more nearby.

To the west and northwest, the lake effect is mainly done as portions of the western Great Lakes await the next shot of snow from our new central storm.
