Eastern U.S. cold snap peaking as heat builds in west

Compared to last week it's a walk in the park.

Glancing at the WMO’s weather warning page, I was struck by the lack of intense activity globally at the moment. I guess spring is not always nutty with the various transitions underway! The pattern flip from last week over the Lower 48 is going strong, with colder than normal weather over the east and building heat in the west.

Weather Watch

Taste of summer. Several days of significant heat are setting up in the western to central United States over the next week. Temperatures in the 90s to around 100 will be common in the Southwest from California to Texas. Warmth eventually rolls all the way to the East Coast over the weekend, but it’s probably somewhat brief with another cooler shot thereafter.

It’s also freezing. The flood zone from last week’s rainfall is frozen Tuesday morning thanks to temperatures in the 20s across Illinois and Indiana and freezing temperatures to southern Missouri and Kentucky. The coldest weather of this blast reaches the East Coast tonight where lows in the 20s are expected to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
