Canada tied September heat record Tuesday, should break it Wednesday

It's feeling like summer, except where it's not.

Southwest Canada and adjacent portions of the United States continue to bake under an unusually strong upper-level high pressure. The national record for September was tied in Canada on Tuesday and it could be outright set Wednesday afternoon.

Weather Watch

Canada heat record. The Tuesday afternoon high of 104 degrees (40 Celsius) in Lytton, British Columbia, tied the national record for September. It should be broken today, given temperature forecasts at least a touch hotter than what was just witnessed — the National Blend of Models below maxes out around 111 degrees! Extreme fall heat in the region persists through Thursday before a slight relaxation.

Lorena moisture. Hurricane Lorena is up to 75 mph off the coast of Mexico early Wednesday. As it shifts north, it is forecast to peak around 100 mph before it eventually weakens into a Baja California landfall. The storm will also send moisture into the Southwest U.S. For now, the focus is southern Arizona, particularly by Thursday, but heavy rain and flood potential may include southern California and other surrounding locations.

Miami rain. A front hung up around southern Florida will cause a few days of heavy rain potential, with the risk for some flooding. About 1 to 3 inches is in the forecast Wednesday, perhaps in a hit-or-miss fashion, with additional downpours likely for the next several. Ongoing drought tempers the threat somewhat.

Winter watch

The next blast of chill into the north-central U.S. is taking over. Much of the northern Plains into Upper Midwest will see temperatures fall into the 30s and 40s tonight.

Another push of chilly air from the north will follow this weekend.
