Amy eyes the United Kingdom and northern Europe
Heat builds in the Midwest and Bermuda laughs off Imelda.
The first named storm of the oncoming winter season is about to slam Scotland with severe winds and heavy rain. If you’ve been watching, you’ll know it’s heavily thanks to all the tropical activity of recent, although we’re getting at least a brief breather there with Imelda departing the Bermuda region.
Weather watch
Amy eyes Europe. Western and northern Scotland are under code orange from the UK Met Office for the risk of dangerous winds from Storm Amy. Remnants of Humberto’s surface low soon to be rejuvenated by the polar jet stream, it will smack the broader region Friday into the weekend. With central pressure perhaps dipping to the 940s mb, the primary concern is sustained winds as high as 60 to 70 mph and gusts as high as 95 mph.

An extremely unusual area of low pressure around the southern Norwegian Sea early Saturday. It rapidly strengthens while passing near Scotland Friday into Saturday and will eventually also impact Norway.
Flipsides of fall. Extreme autumn warmth is building in the Midwest over coming days as the first signs of winter show up further to the west. Numerous records are expected in the northern Plains and upper Midwest, with highs into the 90s in some locations. Ben Noll takes an in-depth look at why this could be a toasty October for portions of North America.

Bermuda handles Imelda. I loved this line from The Royal Gazette in Bermuda: “By all accounts, the resilience of our island and its people have withstood the test. Because that’s what we do.” About a third of the island lost power at peak, with gusts reported of at least 60 mph near the coast and sustained hurricane force on elevated stations there. The storm is rapidly losing tropical characteristics as it moves east-northeast.
