A bit of winter in Alaska as other northern latitudes swelter

Late summer lollygagging along in the Northern Hemisphere.

Relative tranquility is the primary story in the weather world at the moment. Locally, I’m looking at the driest August on record in D.C., if that’s any sign.

Weather watch

Winter is coming. Portions of northern Alaska are under winter storm warning for the likelihood of a mix of sleet, snow and freezing rain. “Colder Arctic air will move onto the North Slope bringing the first signs of winter precipitation to parts of the Brooks Range and the Arctic Slope through Thursday,” wrote NWS Fairbanks. The Winter storm warning is up through Wednesday night for generally light accumulations in what is mostly deep wilderness.

Canada/Arctic heat. Downstream of the Alaska chill, Lytton in western Canada topped 104 degrees (40 Celsius), for a third straight on Tuesday, when it reached 106 degrees. Another is expected Wednesday, which is quite rare for so late in the year there. Additional exceptional warmth has flooded the Russian Arctic over recent times.
